All over the internet are clips from China’s World Robot Games. On one hand, the music industry doesn’t want fully AI music and songs, and Hollywood refuses to consider AI actors for participation, let alone awards. Why, then, are people passionate about Robots playing Olympics-like contests?
Competition makes it possible to stand firm on improvements. Competition gives a path to improve further in the domain. By blocking AI actors from Hollywood awards, the Hollywood industry has pruned AI’s path to the top. This was done to protect Hollywood industry jobs, culture, and artists’ space. But AI has not stopped; yes, it was a setback, but people are still pursuing it, though without recognition. That’s story differs in China, would AI artists apply for Chinese awards then?
Same with AI music; in Australia, they have banned songs that are made fully by AI from the music charts. Again, a setback for those working in AI in the music industry. However, this was done to protect human artists from AI hype.
But now, in the World Robot Games, China is demonstrating its robotics capacity. China is showing what all its robots can do in the world. However, showing that robots can run marathons and play basketball or tennis in no way shows that they are superior at other tasks. A robot can excel at indoor work while struggling at athletics. Winning a medal at China’s World Robot Games does not certify that a robot is good at tasks it has been assigned.
We still want to watch human athletes. We still want to see human sporting competitions. But no one banned China from presenting medals to robots. China allows AI actors, and China allows AI in music. Whether China gives AI actors and singers awards is another question!
